Biomedical Diagnostic Research Laboratories, Inc. (BDR Labs)

BDR Labs developed a test to measure the processes of DNA repair (Serum Protein Thiol).

DNA Repair

DNA repair disorders means that your body has trouble fixing damaged DNA.  Lots of things can damage DNA: cigarette smoke, chemicals, toxic fumes, etc.  When people talk about things that give you cancer, they are usually talking about things that damage your DNA.

We make proteins from amino acids.  Our bodies use “blueprints”, which reside in our DNA, to build “repair proteins” from amino acids.  The molecular program in our DNA dictates the order of amino acids in a protein. A DNA repair protein is one that fixes damaged DNA according to this program.

Problems arise because a gene that programs a particular DNA repair protein becomes corrupted: some repair proteins work on damage caused by toxic fumes, while others might work on damage caused by X-rays.
